Spotify already tells users what their friends are listening to. Now it's expanding that idea to international proportions, thanks to a new tool.
Spotify is a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs. Spotify is all the music you’ll ever need. Listening is everything - Spotify. Created by interactive artist Kyle McDonald, Spotify's first Media Artist in Residence, Serendipity is an animated world map showing when two people start listening to the same song at the same. In April 2020, Jimin's Lie became his solo song to receive over 100 million streams on Spotify, which is a music streaming service. It was followed by Serendipity that crossed 100 million streams in September 2020. After that, recently on November 10, his song Filter created a record of crossing the 100 million mark on Spotify.
Serendipity records where and when at least two people start playing the same song within a tenth of a second of each other. The map quickly zooms in on the two users and plays the song for a few seconds — then, it's off to the next pairing.

While Serendipity is streaming in real time at Spotify's headquarters, only a cached version — recorded Aug. 20 at around 1 p.m. — is available for public viewing, due to security concerns.
Artist Kyle McDonald developed the idea after talking with friends about the feeling of isolation between people in the modern world, despite the fact that their every movement online is tracked by the devices they use.
'I was thinking about these connections that maybe we're not aware of,' Kyle McDonald told Mashable. 'These things are sorting and categorizing us all the time and we don't see it.'
The program collects data from Spotify profiles using Storm, a program that relays real time analytics back to a host. McDonald then mapped the data using d3.js, the same tool used by organizations like the New York Times to display interactive data.
The project was developed during McDonald's stint as Spotify's inaugural media artist in residence, which ends this week. His work is largely based around the blending of coding and music. Spotify is considering ways to expand and integrate Serendipity into how users play and share music, McDonald said, but nothing concrete has been determined yet.

In order to show up on Serendipity, two users must have started listening to the same song on Spotify within a tenth of a second of each other in different towns, cities, states, nations or hemispheres.
'A Never Ending Worldwide Music Festival'
“There are so many ways we’re connected to each other, but sometimes we forget, or we just can’t see it,” said creator McDonald. “In person, it’s easy to see the features we share, or when we share stories in online discussions. But we’re also connected in more ephemeral ways, and we can extract these relationships with new tools. Even though listening to music can be a very private experience, I wanted to see how often this experience is shared.”
“I’ve heard estimates that half a million people are in airplanes at any moment, forming a sort of city in the sky,” he continued. “Maybe Serendipity shows a similar sort of never-ending worldwide music festival. I hope that when people watch it they feel something that reminds them of listening to music with friends, and they think about what music can do to connect people.” Chicago bulls printable schedule 2015-16.
Serendipity, which provides a mesmerizing and jarring experience simultaneously, was built with the Spotify Web API, d3.js, and Storm. See it in action here.

In a new initiative, artists are embedded with a Spotify team and given full access to broad range of development resources. Working alongside engineers the artists can collaborate, share ideas, and develop new work while in residence. The gaol is to inspire the Spotify team with new thinking and perhaps to teach artists something new about music and technology that pushes their work in new directions.
